WHO Report Reveals Global Health Goals Slipping Away as HIV, TB, Malaria Cases Persist
The world is on track to miss critical health targets set for 2030, according to the World Health Organization's 2026 Global Health Statistics Report released Wednesday. The report shows only slow, uneven progress across key diseases, raising alarms among global health experts.
"We are seeing some improvements, but they are far too slow and deeply uneven," said Dr. Maria Rodriguez, WHO's director of health statistics. "Without urgent acceleration, the 2030 targets will not be met."
Key findings include 1.3 million new HIV infections in 2024, 10.7 million new tuberculosis cases, a rise in malaria cases to 282 million, and 42.8 million children suffering from wasting.

The targets are part of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a sweeping agenda adopted in 2015 to improve life worldwide by 2030. Goal 3 aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being, with specific milestones to reduce HIV, TB, malaria, and child malnutrition.
The report acts as a "health grade," measuring progress against those milestones. It replaces the earlier Millennium Development Goals, which saw success in reversing HIV spread by 2015.
HIV: 1.3 Million New Cases in 2024
Despite a 40% drop in new HIV infections since 2010, 1.3 million people were newly infected last year. The SDG target is a 90% reduction by 2030 from 2010 levels—far from reach.
"This is deeply concerning," said Dr. James O'Connell, an epidemiologist at the University of Geneva. "We have the tools to end AIDS, but the pace is far too slow, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa."
TB: 10.7 Million Cases Signal Plateau
Tuberculosis, the tenth leading cause of death globally, remains stubborn. Cases have fallen only 12% since 2015 against an 80% reduction target. The Americas even saw a 13% increase.
"We need new vaccines and stronger treatment programs," said Dr. Amina Diallo, TB expert at the WHO. "Drug-resistant strains are making progress difficult."
Malaria: 8.5% Rise Driven by Resistance and Climate
Malaria cases rose to 282 million in 2024, an 8.5% increase from 2015 levels, despite a goal of 90% reduction. Insecticide-resistant mosquitoes and drug-resistant parasites are worsening the crisis, with eight African countries confirming resistant strains.
"Climate change is expanding mosquito habitats," said Dr. Pierre Lefevre, a vector-borne disease specialist. "Without new tools, we risk further setbacks."
Child Malnutrition: 42.8 Million Children Wasting
Global wasting prevalence stands at 6.6%, affecting 42.8 million children under five. Wasting means children are dangerously thin for their height, increasing mortality risk.
"These children are literally wasting away," said Dr. Fatima Nkosi, UNICEF nutrition chief. "The world must invest in food security and health systems."
What This Means
The findings suggest the SDG health targets will be missed by a wide margin. Experts warn that unless governments dramatically scale up funding, innovation, and equitable access, preventable diseases will continue to claim millions of lives.
"This is a wake-up call," said Dr. Rodriguez. "We must accelerate efforts now, or the 2030 deadline will become a missed opportunity for global health."
Immediate steps include strengthening primary health care, deploying new vaccines and treatments, and addressing climate impacts on disease spread. Without urgent action, the health gap between rich and poor nations will widen further.
